Tri-achnid is a very innovative game full of gorgeous art and effects, with a ton of technical merit behind the engine. In this game, you play as a 3 legged creature who must escape from harsh conditions in order to find a home for it’s young. The creature can scale almost any surface in the game allowing the players to explore impressive landscapes in their search for survival. The controls are simple enough, use the mouse to drag the feet as you crawl around, and the A,S,D and W keys to shift the creature’s mass around for further control. With the simplicity of the controls the game is pretty easy to pick up and play, but the constant dragging and and elasticity of the legs can be frustrating. Unless you want to spend a good bit of time mastering the gameplay you will find progress in the game to be a little tedious and slow. While there are many innovative uses of various physics tricks, I can’t help but find the game to be a little gimmicky, and almost too reliant on the physics. I think with a little more focus on speed and simplifying the interaction a little more the game could have broken through the glass ceiling that has it feeling like another ‘physics crutch’ game. This game is probably not going to appeal to casual gamers, or people looking for something simple and traditional, but if you have the time to get into it, you need to try it out. Like all the badlands games, Tri-achnid has disturbingly fantastic art and a rich world that is definitely worth exploring.

[...] As I mentioned earlier, the gameplay is sorely lacking. It seems without a game designer directing the development, Florian Himsl (aka Komix, programmer on Triachnid and Blockhead) has a hard time taking an engine and making it into a real game. The 3d play field and the camera rotation works perfectly, but the movement of the characters is extremely slow. The battle mode had 2 characters (Santa and Jesus) racing to snowball each other’s snowman. Basically it’s like a race… whoever gets to the snowman first and shoots a snowball wins. [...]
