Aquacubes - Posted by Psycho Goldfish

Mr Mo, of MoFunzone (most notable for hosting flash games on his site without explicit permission from authors), has gained one small bit of redemption in that he has built a very fun game called Aquacubes.

This game borrows the tile sliding gameplay from Pokemon Trozei, and the tile grid of Bejeweled to give us hours of addictive puzzle play.

The graphics are pretty standard puzzle graphics with minimal variety, but still pleasing to look at.

The sound effects are also simple but very fitting. The music is nice and soothing and actually changes up when a song ends rather then just playing the same annoying loop over and over again.

The gameplay is really simple, you can click on any tile and slide it’s entire row or column. The trick is to get 4 same-color tiles touching in order to explode them and keep the game going. You don’t need all the tiles to be in a straight line, just in a 4+ clump, and as new tiles fall in to replace them you can get big combo chains that help you win each level.

One of the nice innovations in the game is the timer and goal representation. A lot of puzzle games simply tell you to clear out X number of tiles in a set time to beat a level. Aquacubes has you clearing tiles in order to fuel a submarine so that it can escape from the depth charge that is floating towards it. Sure it’s not the fanciest presentation, but it’s nice to see something different in these types of games.

While it urks me to send any traffic to MoFunzone, who has hosted unauthorized copies of my games in the past, I don’t think this game should suffer for the sins of the father so-to-speak. With that said, you should definitely give this game a play or 2….or 30 depending on how much free time you have to waste.

Gamesheep’s Makos ( http://www.gamesheep.com/game/makos/ ) is way better; graphics-related as well as catchy music and smoothness-related.
